Judo: More than a sport – a lifestyle of respect and technique
Judo is a Japanese martial art practiced by millions of people worldwide. It is a discipline that focuses on technique, control and respect. Instead of kicking or punching, judo is about throws, holds and learning to use force in a smart way – by moving with it instead of fighting it.
It is a sport that not only develops physical skills, but also contributes to mental growth. Concepts such as self-control, perseverance and discipline are at the heart of every training. Whether you are a child, adult or senior – judo offers valuable lessons for everyone that can be applied far beyond the mat.
The physical and mental benefits of judo
Judo is an excellent way to build strength, balance and fitness. You use your entire body for throws and holds, which trains your muscles functionally. You also learn to fall and get up safely – a skill that is also useful in everyday life, especially for young children and the elderly.
In addition to the physical aspect, judo also has a strong educational character. You learn to deal with winning and losing, to work together and to show respect for your opponent. Children develop more self-confidence, concentration and social skills, while adults often gain peace and mental resilience in the judo school.
Gyms in the Netherlands that offer judo
Judo is well represented throughout the Netherlands. In almost every city or village you will find a gym or association where you can follow judo lessons. From large clubs in cities such as Utrecht, Den Bosch and Leeuwarden to smaller judo schools in village centres - the choice is large and varied.
Many gyms are affiliated with the Judo Bond Nederland (JBN), which provides a recognized curriculum, qualified instructors and the opportunity to take exams for belts or participate in tournaments. On Fightstyle.nl you will find an overview of judo schools in your area, including information about trial lessons and lesson times.
This is how a typical judo training goes
Each training starts with a warm-up in which we work on mobility, flexibility and body control. Then we practice techniques such as throws (nage-waza), holds (osae-komi-waza) and escapes. The exercises are taught safely and step by step, with a lot of attention to correct execution.
At the end of the lesson, gerandori is often done: a playful form of sparring in which you apply the learned techniques in a realistic setting. For children, this is done in an accessible and playful way, while adults can do more intensive variants. Respect, safety and development are always central.
What do you need to start judo?
To start with judo you mainly need motivation and sports clothing. In the beginning you can often participate in a sports outfit, but in the long term a judo suit (gi) is needed - a sturdy suit that is specially designed for the techniques of judo. This also includes a belt (obi), which indicates your grade or level.
Fightstyle.nl offers a carefully selected range of judo suits for every level: from beginners to competitive athletes. Accessories such as bags, belt sets and protective clothing are also available from us. Our specialists are happy to help you find the right equipment, so that you can train safely and comfortably.
Who is judo suitable for?
Judo is for everyone – regardless of age, gender or condition. Children from the age of four can already playfully get acquainted with the basic principles, while adults and seniors can also get a lot out of judo. The sport is particularly suitable for those who want to work on both physical and mental development.
People with disabilities can also practice judo: there are adapted lesson programs that focus on inclusivity and safety. Because judo is about technique and balance instead of brute force, people can join at any level and grow within the sport at their own pace.
