BJJ: Strategy, control and technique on the ground
BJJ – Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in full – is a modern combat sport with a strong focus on ground fighting, locks and submissions. The sport has become known worldwide thanks to the rise of MMA and the successes of the Gracie family. Unlike many other combat sports, BJJ is not about punching or kicking, but about control, technique and timing.
The unique thing about BJJ is that you learn to neutralize an opponent, regardless of the difference in strength or size. With clever takeovers, leverage and positional control you can dominate from seemingly disadvantageous situations. This makes it one of the most technical and strategic combat sports there is.
Why BJJ is the sport for body and mind
Physically, BJJ is an intensive full-body workout. You develop strength, flexibility, cardio and body control in a functional way. Through constant interaction with training partners, you also train your reaction time and learn to deal with resistance, pressure and fatigue. It is a sport in which your muscles and nervous system work together optimally.
BJJ also offers many advantages mentally. You are forced to remain calm under pressure, learn to think tactically and develop problem-solving skills. Each role (sparring session) is like a chess game on the mat. And because you are constantly making mistakes and learning from them, you automatically build perseverance and mental resilience.
Gyms in the Netherlands where you can train BJJ
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is growing explosively in the Netherlands. In almost every major city – such as Amsterdam, Nijmegen, Tilburg, Leiden or Zwolle – you will find gyms with BJJ on the schedule. Many of these gyms are affiliated with international organizations or work with certified black belts as head trainers.
In addition, MMA schools, grappling academies and judo/jiu-jitsu clubs also offer BJJ lessons. This means that beginners and advanced athletes can go to all sorts of places. On Fightstyle.nl you will find an overview of gyms throughout the Netherlands where you can start with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu – including information about styles, levels and lesson times.
What does a typical BJJ training session look like?
A BJJ training consists of three parts: warming-up, technique and sparring (rolling). After a mobilizing warming-up you start learning techniques such as guard passes, sweeps, escapes or submissions. The techniques are built up step by step and practiced with a partner.
This is often followed by live sparring: controlled situations in which you apply techniques in real time. This makes BJJ realistic and challenging. No training is the same, because every partner, situation or position requires different solutions. This makes the learning process endless – and that is exactly what many practitioners find so addictive.
What do you need to start BJJ?
To get started with BJJ, you don’t need much. For traditional classes, you’ll wear a BJJ gi – a sturdy suit designed to grip while rolling. If you prefer to train without a gi, you’ll do no-gi BJJ , which involves wearing a rash guard and athletic shorts. Both styles are equally popular and are often combined.
Furthermore, a mouth guard, slippers for off the mat and a sports bag are useful. Fightstyle.nl offers a wide range of BJJ gear – from gis and rashguards to belts, bags and accessories. Our selection is based on quality, fit and durability, so you can train safely and comfortably.
Who is BJJ suitable for?
BJJ is for everyone: young or old, male or female, beginner or athlete. Because strength is not the leading factor, people of any size and level can be successful. The sport is also very accessible for people who do not like impact (such as punches or kicks), but still want to learn how to defend themselves physically.
For children, there are special youth classes, in which discipline, cooperation and playful learning are central. For adults, BJJ offers a physically and mentally challenging path with endless learning opportunities. Whether you train recreationally or dream of tournaments – in BJJ there is always room to grow.
